Social scientists frequently use quantitative methods to study elections, wars, discrimination, human rights, and other important social phenomena. This course provides students with an introduction to fundamental concepts in statistical analysis, research design, and causal inference as well as contemporary examples of how those concepts can be applied in the real world. The goal is to enable students to not only become sophisticated consumers of quantitative research in the social sciences but to enable them to conduct their own research using machine-readable data and software and to effectively present their results to others.
There are many ways to prepare and teach a course like this. Some courses like this are gates, serving to screen out students who don’t do well in them from taking other quantitative courses. Some courses like this are invitations, instruments designed to encourage students to explore more quantitative work. It’s my intent for this course to be the second type.
